April 19th Topic:
Unpacking Privilege... in a Time of Crisis
3-5pm Pacific Time (includes time for discussion)
with Bayo Akomolafe, Ayako Nagano
hosted by Jul Bystrova
with the Social Justice Working Group and the Inner Resilience Network
Privilege often allows those who enjoy it to choose whether or not to understand the real and deep connection between climate change, environmental and economic destruction and social justice. In this talk, we will shine a light on the nature of privilege and some of the obvious and not so obvious ways it shows up in our lives. We will especially shine a light on how it shows up in times of disaster or crisis. This is a very important aspect of our collective healing.
We can become more actively dismantling of the structure of racism or other forms of privilege as a economic and political idea, and the colonizing mindset. Living from a place that's actively seeking reconciliation and equity helps us deal with the divided world as it is. By examining the culture we inherited from history, we heal and build new ways forward together. We will explore the challenges and blind spots of the privileged, and ways that they can be addressed. There is a lot of confusion that comes up related to this subject! No question is too basic, our messiness in our process is welcome. We endeaver to hold a safe space for it all.
